ADVICE
Small things that make a big difference
Choose your codes carefully
- Avoid birthdays or years as alarm codes: they are the first a burglar will try.
- Do not reuse codes from other services (cards, email).
- Enable keypad lock-out after repeated wrong codes.
24-hour cable protection
Where cables run outside, protect them against tampering with a 24-hour zone on the alarm panel.
If anyone cuts or shorts the cable, the alarm sounds even when it is not armed.
Choose your installer carefully
You are not just choosing a technician, but someone you let into your home or business and trust with your safety.
Meet the technician during the site survey and ask to see their operating licence.
Do not skip servicing
Batteries keep your alarm running during power cuts and need regular replacement.
Book a service every 2 to 2.5 years: new batteries and a check of every contact and motion detector.
Safety while on holiday
- Test the alarm before you leave: contacts, motion sensors, siren and the link to the centre.
- Update the receiving centre with any new contact numbers.
- Ask someone to empty your letterbox and do not announce your absence on social media.
- If your alarm uses GSM, make sure the SIM card has credit.
Install an alarm system
Research shows that an alarm alone deters around 70% of would-be burglars.
For a small yearly cost it connects to a receiving centre that alerts you and the police.
Install a camera or CCTV
One camera is often enough to deter opportunistic thieves.
Combined with an alarm and a network recorder, you can watch your space from anywhere.
Can I move around the house with the alarm armed?
Yes. In night mode the indoor motion sensors are bypassed and perimeter devices, such as door contacts and infrared beams, keep you protected.
Can I have an alarm with a pet at home?
Yes. Pet-immune detectors let your animal move freely without setting off the alarm.
What is a service and how often is it needed?
We replace the two rechargeable batteries (panel and siren), test every zone and clean the detectors.
We recommend it every 2 to 2.5 years, depending on how the alarm has been used.
Why does the siren sound during power cuts?
It usually means the panel battery has run down and needs servicing. The siren then runs on its own battery and sounds.
